8 – Cookies and other technologies we use

What are cookies?
Cookies are small text strings that the sites visited by the user send to the terminal used (usually stored on the browser and sent from your device in use as a PC, a mobile phone, a tablet), where they are stored to be then retransmitted to the same sites at the next visit by the same user. During navigation on a site, the user can also receive cookies on their own terminal that are sent from different websites or web servers (so-called “third parties”), on which some elements may exist (such as, for example, images, maps, sounds, specific links to pages of other domains) on the site that the same is visiting.

Cookies, usually present in users’ browsers in very large numbers and sometimes even with long temporal persistence, are used for different purposes: execution of computer authentication, monitoring of sessions, storage of information on specific configurations concerning users accessing the server, etc.

Types of cookies
There are two categories: technical cookies and profiling cookies

Technical cookies are generally necessary for the proper functioning of the website and to allow navigation; without them you may not be able to view the pages correctly or use some services. For example, a technical cookie is essential to keep the user connected throughout the visit to a website, or to store the language, display, and so on.
Technical cookies can be further divided into:

  • navigation cookies , which guarantee the normal navigation and use of the website (allowing, for example, a purchase or registration to certain privileged areas of the site);
  • analytics cookies , similar to technical cookies only if they are used directly by the site administrator to collect information, in an aggregate and anonymous form, on the number of users and how they visit the site.
  • functionality cookies , which allow the user to browse according to a set of selected criteria (for example, the language, the products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service made to the same.

Profiling cookies have the task of profiling the user and are used in order to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user during his navigation. So among the profiling cookies we find: session cookies (they are deleted when the browser is closed), persistent cookies (they remain in the browser for a certain period of time), first-party cookies (used directly by the site operator) and third-party cookies parts (generated by third-party services).

Information on the use of cookies
At the moment of the first visit of a user on the site a short message will appear in order to recall that the site uses technical and profiling cookies, including third parties cookies. Until then this website does NOT send any cookies to the user’s terminal. Only after accepting the sending of cookies the site will load the scripts that will generate cookies. The choice made by the user will be recorded by the system (through technical cookies) for a period of 30 days. After this period (or if the user manually delete the cookie in the cache of his browser) the brief information will reappear leading the user to confirm or deny their availability to send cookies.

How cookies are disabled
It is possible to disable cookies directly from your browser, from the following links, following the instructions:
Disable cookie on Firefox
Disable cookie on Chrome
Disable cookie on Internet Explorer
Disable cookie on Safari
Disable cookie on Opera

Alternatively, you can control some 3rd party cookies by using a privacy enhancement platform such as optout.aboutads.info or youronlinechoices.com. For more information about cookies, visit allaboutcookies.org.
