Pompeii is today, the most important open-air museum in the world. It was buried under a layer of volcanic ashes in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. and yet our archaeology expert promises to bring Pompeii back to life for you with a detailed description of daily life in a Roman town. Then on for an afternoon in Naples at the Archaeological Museum where frescoes, mosaics, statues, papyri and utensils discovered from around Vesuvius are on display or to Sorrento for a drive along the coast and an ice cream tasting session.
Spectacular drive by car or minibus along the Amalfi coastline, which has only one road cutting through the rock in a succession of crags, steep climbs and vertiginous drops. We’ll pass through the many little villages on the Sorrento peninsula, famous for their glorious past and craftsmanship of coral cameos and wooden inlay.
Spend a day in the volcanic “fields of fire” just outside Naples to view the effects of past volcanic action in the area and to see how the Romans lived in Pozzuoli, Baia, Misenum and Cuma. Look down on the underwater archaeological park in the bay of Baia through the glass hull of a specially designed viewing boat. Lunch is followed by a visit to the Solfatara volcano and then to the Roman food market in Pozzuoli.
The Royal Palace of Caserta is today, a UNESCO world heritage site. It belonged to the Bourbon Royal family and is surrounded by vast parklands containing fountains and sculptures and the English and Italian Gardens.
Spend 2 days on a bicycle with a local guide being shown around this historically important island and relax in hot thermal baths after !
